- Old Towns of Djenne, Mali
* B.C 250년경부터 제네는 사하라 횡단 금 무역과 연계된 시장센터로 발달.
* 15-16세기 이슬람 전파의 정신적 중심지.
* 계절적으로 반복되는 홍수 등 자연환경에 적응하기 위하여 토게르라 불리는 작은 언덕에 집을 세움.
* Inhabited since 250 B.C., Djenne became a market centre and an important link in the trans-Saharan gold trade. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was one of the centres for the propagation of Islam. Its traditional houses, of which nearly 2,000 have survived, are built on hillocks (toguere) as protection from the seasonal floods.
